Facebook knows everything about you!
Even things you want to hide!
Facebook doesn’t just record everything you say through the site (even your private messages), and everything you look at – it sells that information to marketing companies and even political parties. And now it has been accused of using mobile phone microphones to listen to your conversations too.
For a lot of people, Facebook sees a harmless bit of fun – a chance to speak to friends, share jokes and pass your comments on what’s going on in life.
But the truth is – Facebook knows a huge amount about where you go, what you do – and what you think!
Nothing is Private
The software inside Facebook looks at everything you do and say. If you express an opinion on a news story or politics, Facebook knows. If you say where you’ve been to eat or shop, Facebook knows. If you have arguments with friends, Facebook knows. Of course, so does everyone else who is a Facebook friend, but this is different. It knows even your private, secret hidden thoughts and messages.
You send people private messages or you hide your posts so only a few special people can read them. But Facebook still records and keeps everything, and in its databases it has all that information. Facebook knows what you think about politics or issues of the day – it knows who you like and don’t like – and it knows all your secret messages.
And if you use the Facebook app, or you log on to Facebook and then don’t log off before closing your browser, Facebook also watches everything else you do on the internet. So it evens spies on you when you’re not “on Facebook”!
So many people use Facebook without thinking about what they are saying. They use it so much, and it is so common in life today, that people post incredible things. So are you careful what you put on Facebook? Do you log off it before you use other parts of the internet? Do you really want Facebook to know what you think or feel about everything?
Facebook Could Listen To Your Conversations Too
And Facebook could be listening to your voice, so it even knows things about you that you haven’t typed in.
Because if you have Facebook on your phone, or if your PC has a microphone in it, then Facebook could be using the microphone to listen in on you. And people are beginning to discover just how much Facebook does to learn everything about people who use it.
An American news station in Ohio ran a report on Facebook spying. It showed a university professor proving it. Professor Kelli Burns of USF showed that Facebook listens in:
Kelli enabled the microphone feature and talked about her desire to go on safari, right down to her mode of transportation. “I’m really interested in going on an African safari. I think it’d be wonderful to ride in one of those jeeps,” she said aloud, phone in hand.
Less than 60 seconds later, the first post on her Facebook feed was a safari story that seemed to pop up out of nowhere. Turns out, it was a story that had been posted three hours earlier. And, after mentioning a jeep, a car ad also appeared on her page.”
Other people have reported on the website Reddit about Facebook posting information related to what they have talked about near their phone. One man who used Reddit said:
“Last year I was working up in Northern Alberta and one day at lunch we started talking about our favorite snacks and I mentioned these Tamari almonds I had once. I hadn’t heard or thought of these things for a long time. Next thing I know my Facebook ad space is full of Tamari flavored everything.”
Of course Facebook issued a denial to the TV station – but the scientific proof was there for all to see.
And even Facebook do not deny they spy on what you type into Facebook. They admit they do this to read what people say so they can “target advertisements”. That is their excuse – they only spy on everything you do or say so that they can sell that information to companies for advertising!
Just think about it for a moment. Facebook uses your mobile phone’s microphone (or the microphone on your friends’ phones) to listen to you speaking – at work, at home, when you’re out. It hears what you say to your spouse when you argue (or even worse!) If you go to a meeting to talk about politics, it listens. It is the Big Brother technology George Orwell warned us about in his famous novel 1984.
WHAT TO DO – SUMMARY
Always log off if you are not using Facebook – especially if you use the phone app.
If there is information or feelings you don’t want Facebook or businesses to know, then don’t put them on Facebook.
Check your privacy settings, to ensure you control who can see what information about you
