Protect yourself against the health risks of electromagnetic radiation, wi-fi and mobile phone signals
Some doctors have been saying for years that mobile phone radiation can cause cancer. And now that Wi-Fi has become more common, more people are in danger from that radiation too. Electromagnetic Force (EMF) radiation damages cells and DNA, and that’s why some governments have banned Wi-Fi from areas where there are lots of young children. But our government says Wi-Fi and mobile phones are OK. So is there a risk?
Phones and Wi-Fi use microwave radiation, just like in an oven. This radiation creates electrical and magnetic fields inside the body and heats up cells. Cells get damaged, and sometimes so badly that they stop working, making people ill. And for some people, the damage happens in their DNA, which leads to cancer.
The evidence is clear. In 1990 two US scientists found that EMF fields increased the risk of cancer 1600% (this was before mobile phones were common). In 2008 another study looked at a “cluster” or outbreak of cancer in a US middle school. The doctors doing the study were convinced that EMF radiation in the school was causing thyroid and skin cancer. And in 2011, the World Health Organisation ruled that EMF is “possibly carcinogenic” (cancer-forming), because mobile phones increased the risk of brain cancer. And in 2015 Swedish doctors proved the risk is so high, we need greater protection from EMF radiation.
And there is also evidence that mobile phone radiation causes heart problems similar to the highest stress levels.
Some governments have acted
There are some governments around the world who have introduced laws to reduce our exposure to EMF radiation, especially for children. In France, Wi-Fi and wireless devices like phones and tablets are banned in homes with children under 3. In schools for children under 11, Wi-Fi is restricted and children must be given protective devices. In Israel, Wi-Fi is banned altogether in classes with children under 10.
A major court case in Italy has made it official that mobile phones can cause cancer and other diseases. The Italian court rules that a man who worked for the Italian phone company for decades did get a brain tumour from having to use a mobile phone 8 hours or more every day.
What can we do to protect ourselves?
Here are some things you can do right now.
At work and at home, if it is possible, do not use Wi-Fi at all. Get Wi-Fi removed and use data cables that plug into computers. (You will also get a much faster internet service this way too!) But if you must have Wi-Fi, the only switch it on when you need to use it (5-10 minutes per hour maximum). Do not leave it on all the time. In particular, switch it off at night. If you can, just switch it on
Do not have Wi-Fi routers in any room where anyone sleeps or rooms where children play.
Use your mobile phone as little as possible as well. No more than an hour a day making calls if possible. When you do use it, the danger is greatest if you hold the phone up to your head (I am sure you have felt your ear get hot if you do use a phone next to your ears). So always use a “hands-free” set with a microphone and earphones, and never hold it to your ear. And do not let young children use phones at all.
Here are 10 golden rules for phone use:
- Switch off your phone it you are not going to use it for at least one hour.
- A lot of people keep their phone on and near their bed overnight. Never do this. Switch off your phone and keep it in another room. (You will sleep better too as phone radiation can make it more difficult to sleep).
- When you use your phone, always use a hand-free earpiece and microphone
- If you can’t use a hands-free set, then use the phone with the loudspeaker on, so that you don’t need to hold it to your head.
- Keep mobile phone calls to a minimum – don’t talk for long periods and use your land line instead whenever you can.
- Do not carry your phone in your pocket if possible – keep it further away from your body, in a bag. A particular warning for men – don’t carry your phone in your front trouser pocket, as the radiation and the heat can both damage your testicles.
- Use SMS or text messaging services instead of calling if you can.
- Don’t let young children uses mobiles.
- Pregnant women should be especially careful and use mobiles as little as possible.
- If you are in a low signal area, in the open air or especially inside a building, don’t make or answer calls. When signal strength is low, phones must increase the amount of radiation they emit to boost the signal, so low signal areas are more dangerous.
Household gadgets can also be a problem
Anything electrical gives off electromagnetic radiation (EMR). This sort of radiation is not as dangerous as nuclear radiation, but electrical devices do give off magnetic fields and radio waves that damage our health.
Now homes are packed with electrical devices that flood our homes with radiation. We often have several TVs, endless electrical gadgets in most rooms, multiple radios, electrical beauty devices, all giving off electromagnetic radiation.
And then there are also the worst offenders – microwave ovens, wi-fi hubs, cell-phones and computers with wi-fi connections, all giving off large amounts of radio waves.
Protect yourself – reduce EMR
None of us can live without electricity and electrical devices, but we MUST all do things to reduce and minimise our exposure to the electromagnetic radiation that modern life creates.
Here are some things we urge you to do:
- Turn off anything electrical if you are not using it. Don’t just turn it off with the power button. Unplug it altogether (many devices still use small amounts of electricity even when they are switched off).
- Minimise the number of electrical gadgets you use – try to find replacements (for instance, electric can openers, toothbrushes, etc) Do not have long electric cables on devices or use extension leads unless essential – keep wiring as short as possible
- Do not use a microwave oven
- Try to do without wi-fi altogether. Wi-fi signals are the most harmful EMR is your home, and it is best not to have any wi-fi signals if possible. Plug your computer into your internet router with a cable (this also has the benefit that it is much faster than wi-fi!)
- If your must use wi-fi, then only turn it on when you need to use it and switch it off again as soon as you have finished.
- Wi-fi signals are also sent by other devices. You probably know that any cell-phone, tablets or laptops will broadcast wi-fi, so again only turn them on when needed. But TVs and printers could also be wi-fi devices – disable the wi-fi signal in these devices
- When you use your cell-phone, instead of making calls, use text messaging systems, WhatsApp or Facetime. If you do need to make calls, use your loudspeaker/microphone or a hands-free set so that you don’t hold you phone against your ear.
- Do not use cordless landline phones
- Do not use remote controls for TVs, radios, etc
- EMR in the bedroom can mean 8 hours of constant exposure to damaging radiation. And EMR is also proven to disrupt sleep, so you do not sleep as well if you are being exposed to EMR. So remove all electrical gadgets you can from your bedroom, and switch off your wi-fi hub at night if you are using it during the day
